My god.

430 applicants.

I never expected so many for our hire.

What caused the applicant flood?

Hiring is just a marketing funnel.

  • How do you drive more traffic to the job?

  • Build enough trust & excitement to apply?

  • Increase conversion to taking the test?

  • Targeting for quality?

  • Copywrite the job description (so they actually read it)

We’re two marketers running a staffing business.

So we can drive much more traffic. And get much higher conversion than typical staffers.

Meaning we get better quality marketing talent.

We think of everything as a funnel.

The other advantage we have is we understand marketing roles.

I’m a CMO. My business partner just exited his email marketing agency (he hired 53 employees).

So we’re only hiring for roles we deeply understand and can test.

A few roles we just hired for:

  • Update your CRM

  • Manage your emails

  • Ecommerce manager

  • Media buyer

  • Email strategist

We keep the roles tight so we actually know who’s good and who’s not.

Again. Quality.

Oh. And we’ve narrowed in on hiring from South America.

I’m really bullish on South America.

But I’ll admit. I’m biased.

I’m typing this to you now from my kitchen in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Visiting my family.

I know… Plot twist. I’m secretly latino.

So this way we meet talent in person. And reach them in our Spanish ads and newsletter.

Really excited about this moat we’re building.

Anyway.

Today’s issue is a quick one. I’m drowning in FOUR HUNDRED applications. We’re building the systems to onboard the hires quickly.

A few things I read this week

I’m on the hunt for deeply insightful, unique ideas, hard earned from experience.

I found Greg Isenberg.

Two pieces from Greg this week. The first on checking your ego and prioritizing cash flow instead of big paper valuations.

The second on the systems you need to build a profit machine.

This tweet hit home.

My ego made me obsess over paper valuations.

By 28, I had an offer to raise $1M.

I built a FinTech that helped small businesses exit.

We didn’t take it. Shut down the startup. And we’re now building a business focused on cash flow.

We are fully bootstrapping our staffing business.

Okay last one. On the importance of systems:

Justin Ishbia has bought 586 small businesses!

The main lesson? Document everything.

If a mistake happens on one part of the business they build it into the system and make sure it doesn’t happen again.

For my friends: What’s going on with Brian?

A few years ago I jumped out of an airplane at 13,000 feet.

Last weekend I hiked outside Cusco, Peru at 17,000 feet!

Every step was exhausting.

But so worth it.

I’m back in Ecuador now.
